Dramatic Powder Room Makeovers

Your guest bathroom, or powder room, presents a great place to start with your home makeover. This small room takes less money and effort to decorate than your larger rooms. Plus, you get a chance to develop you personal home interior design skills without committing to a huge project.

Because guests view this little space privately, visitors take more time to notice the interior design details. For this reason, you want to showcase great design to make a good impression. Also, hospitality shines in a well-appointed guest bath where it takes just a couple of splurges on extravagant fixtures to make a huge impact that your guests will remember. Company may not remember your living room walls because they’re focusing on the people in the space, but they will remember your powder room.

What if you don’t have a powder room and guests use your children’s bathroom?

Children appreciate being treated as adults and don’t need a childish bathroom. Don’t use juvenile-patterned wallpaper or accessories.

Keep bathtub toys in the bathtub (in one of those plastic-coated wire baskets) and hang a ceiling to floor curtain in front of the bathtub. This curtain can be hung in front of the normal plastic liner from the ceiling. For small bathrooms, where the daylight comes in over the bathtub, use white or another light-emitting fabric. A curtain made of soft gauze or cotton does double duty: it softens the space with fabric while masking the bathtub, which is not a guest-bath feature.

Powder Room Basics

To finish any proper powder room, you need a great sink, faucet, and cabinet with a large mirror, plus the toilet. If you’re working on a budget, look for sinks on sale at a warehouse store or at Habitat for Humanity’s thrift store, ReStore. Don’t buy a poorly constructed cabinet; look for an antique dresser or buffet that spans the wall space.

Dramatic powder rooms emphasize remarkable mirrors. You may be tempted to keep the ugly wall-mounted medicine cabinet, but if you truly want an impressive guest bath, hang a spectacular mirror instead.

Store toothbrushes and other necessities in the cabinet below and move medicines to the kitchen, out or reach of children.

If you need to replace the toilet, which only needs to be functional because the other details will outshine it, look for a toilet which blends in with your home’s style.

Powder Room Makeover Tips

Besides the bathroom fixtures, your flooring, walls, and ceiling offer the most economical home makeover opportunities. Because of the small area, you can use large ceramic tiles that mimic stone, marble, or even wood. Also, linoleum comes in a multitude of interesting patterns and has the benefit of being warmer to bare feet than tile.

The area that makes the greatest interior design impact, the walls and ceiling, give the best place to have fun with your home makeover. Decorative paint finishes, like subtle layering of glazes, add the designer’s touch without the expense. Choose colors that harmonize with the rest of your home to reinforce your color theme. Use color psychology to make your powder room present a cooling oasis or a warming shelter.

Use an essential oil diffuser to help your powder room smell as good as it looks. Avoid unnatural sprays that cause irritation to those with sensitivities.

The final interior design detail, exquisite lighting, doesn’t need to kill your budget. Perhaps your dining chandelier would make a better statement in your bathroom than it does in your dining room. If you life in a climate with high humidity and hot summers, a ceiling fan helps keep the room cool. Look for a fan with lights that point upward. Lights shining down on you in a small space feel over-powering. Also, use wall sconces on either side of the vanity mirror instead of the usual builder’s light fixture above the mirror.

Finishing touches, guest towels, hard soaps, and lotions make your guests and yourself feel pampered. Choose generous, thick, and soft hand towels to add softness to an otherwise hard surface space.

Because people feel more comfortable in smaller bathrooms which offer privacy, a guest bathroom offers the perfect place to practice your design skills. Splurge a little on lavish wall finishes and guest towels to showcase your home’s interior design.

How to Enhance your Bathroom with Furniture

by Bath Towel on January 9, 2010

For one of the smallest rooms in a house or flat, bathrooms do require a considerable amount of bathroom furniture. Most people think of bathroom furniture being the lavatory bowl, the basin and the bath and or shower unit but there is much more to bathroom furniture than that.

If the bathroom is of a reasonable size people like bathroom furniture to include vanity units that box in the pipes below a hand basin and often includes a cupboard and a number of drawers or slots. Vanity unit bathroom furniture comes in many varied designs and sizes so there should be the right size of vanity unity / bathroom furniture for every size of bathroom. Another key item of bathroom furniture is the vanity mirror which often has lights as having good lighting is crucial. Sometime the vanity mirror is also a cupboard above a basin and is the kind of bathroom furniture that stores razors, shaving foam etc. For a really tidy effect there is bathroom furniture that combines a vanity unit with cupboard for wash basins and also hides away all the pipes for the lavatory bowl. This type of bathroom furniture provides a very neat solution to making what may be a small room look and feel special. Countertop units and basin stands make for stunning items of bathroom furniture as do free-standing, tall cabinets and corner basin units. Larger bathrooms can take larger items of bathroom furniture such as his & hers basins, and free-standing baths. Mirrors may not be considered bathroom furniture but no bathroom can do without a really good mirror.

Bathrooms have come on a long way since the old days when designer bathroom furniture was simply an avocado bathroom suite. Today, designer bathroom furniture starts off with some fabulous design of radiator. A cold bathroom is unacceptable so having good designer bathroom furniture that includes a radiator and heated towel radiator is a crucial place to start when choosing designer bathroom furniture. The next place to consider is the size of the basin, the type of taps you want for the basin and the designer bathroom furniture that surrounds the basin by way of a vanity unit. Of course above the basin is another item of designer bathroom furniture and that is a mirrored cabinet that is usually lit, so that make up and shaving can be done in perfect lighting. Next to the basin is usually a lavatory bowl and designer bathroom furniture usually encapsulates the whole lavatory system except for the bowl itself. In larger bathrooms, designer bathroom furniture can include free-standing corner cupboards for storing spare towels etc. Of course the main item of designer bathroom furniture has to be the bath itself and baths these days can include free-standing baths with feet in the four corners. Other items of designer bathroom furniture have to include the shower cubicle which can come in a great variety of amazing designs. Of course, the lavatory paper holder is also designer bathroom furniture and comes in many stylish designs. As with kitchens, the look and the feel of the tops of designer bathroom furniture is also a key element of the overall tone of a bathroom.

So to recap, when choosing designer bathroom furniture it all depends to some extent on the size of the bathroom. If you have lots of space then there is great scope for turning designer bathroom furniture into one of the features of a house or apartment. However, most bathrooms are quite small so top quality designer bathroom furniture that is compact and stylish is key. Getting the heating right is probably one of the first items to think about when choosing designer bathroom furniture followed by the positioning of the lavatory and the wash basin. If there is room for a shower cubicle and bath then that is the way to go with designer bathroom furniture but if there is only room for a bath, there are some excellent mixer, shower taps and shower screens enabling the bath to act as both a bath and a shower.

Quite a bit of very personal time is spent in bathrooms so choosing quality designer bathroom furniture including the right size and design of taps and plugs is key.

There is no doubt that quality bathroom units really turn what are functional items into a room of beauty. For example, bathroom units into which hand basins are placed really look good and in the cupboards beneath all manner of items including cleaning equipment can be stored. There is also room in some of the larger bathroom units for several draws enabling you to store many larger items such as towels etc. Of course, mirrored bathroom units above a basin are also essential for both men and women and those bathroom units should also have lights. Other forms of bathroom units include freestanding corner cupboards for storing towels and face cloths and there are bathroom units that encase the mechanism that makes lavatories flush. Other bathroom units can include wall hung cupboards and bathroom units that go around radiators so that there is no risk of touching hot metal with bare flesh. It is easy to forget that bathroom units also disguise the underneath of baths and they can also be cupboards for storing items. A good sized bathroom will have several types of bathroom units giving the bathroom the feel and comfort that all bathrooms should have. Even small bathrooms with carefully selected bathroom units can look stylish and inviting. The key thing to remember with bathroom units is that bathroom units are there to serve and to complement well-designed basins, baths and lavatories. The whole ensemble of a bathroom including the bathroom units combined with nicely painted walls will create a warm soothing atmosphere at the end of a hard working day or a warm soothing atmosphere to ease you into the working day.

So many options are available nowadays when it comes to redecorating your bathroom. You have the fit options, do you go for a fully fitted bathroom, or simple freestanding units. Maybe a hybrid, some mounted furniture like a bathroom cabinet or towel rack and some moveable storage units for all your toiletries. You could the simple and easy to fit option were the units are already made up with just the last part of assembling the pieces together to form the unit. Perform for amateur DIY people.

You should have a think about what kind of bathroom you would like and one that suits your needs and budget, this will help you narrow down the options. Once you have decided on the layout why not use the internet to research the different styles and designs on the market. Thinking about the bathroom when it is finished will ensure you include everything necessary and maximise the use of the room. Finally if it is a family bathroom do think about the bathroom furniture you are going to buy, avoid putting in items that younger kids can climb up on or possibly injury themselves with.

Bathroom Furniture For An Rv

by Bath Towel on November 29, 2009

Life in an RV can be wonderful or frustrating, depending on what you make it. The author lived full-time in an RV for two years, working on a commissioned book. Actually, she lived in two RVs, one after the other. The first was a 20′ motorhome. Those of us who were “full-timers” rather than vacationers joked about the way to get along with your spouse in a small RV. Whenever you meet going in opposite directions, hug and pivot. We hugged and pivoted in the tiny 20′ motorhome for 365 days. Then we “moved up” to a 30′ 5th wheel and continued to hug and pivot for another 365 days. It was part of keeping a happy marriage while living 24/7/365 in a small RV.

RV Bathroom Furniture

RV bathroom furniture is another part of living in a small RV. (Note: Every RV is small when you live in it.) RV bathroom furniture must be ready to “hug and pivot” to work in as little space as possible.

RV bathroom furniture has several requirements. It must be…

1. Lightweight: Weight is very important when traveling in an RV. The more weight you put into RV bathroom furniture, the harder you will work your engine. You may also slow your travels. Think lightweight! The wooden magazine rack may look better, but the plastic one may weigh less.

2. Practical and efficient: Add nothing that doesn’t earn its keep. RV and camping stores offer hundreds of appealing gadgets. Some serve no real purpose, or do not fulfill promises. When you look at bathroom furniture, consider what it will do for you. Look around to see if there is another item that will better do the job. Small baskets may help you organize, but small boxes may do it better.

3. Mildew-resistant: An RV bathroom is a small, closed space. Unless you want to spend hours scrubbing mildew, make sure all bathroom furniture is mildew-resistant. Shower curtains or pleated doors should be treated to resist mildew. Shower hoses should, too. If you need a curtain or shade at the window, get one in mildew-resistant material.

4. Easy to clean: Most people use an RV for vacations and do not want to spend their time cleaning the bathroom. Look for bathroom furniture that is smooth, free of seams and cracks that collect dirt, mold, and mildew.

5. Stable: Any RV bathroom furniture you add must stay in place when traveling rough roads. Even if you don’t plan to go off-road to a remote campsite, you will encounter tough patches in road construction. Items that will not stay put require frequent packing and unpacking.

RV bathroom furniture that does not meet these criteria should be considered carefully. Chances are good that you will trash it or replace it soon if it fails in one or more points.

RV Bathroom Remodel

An RV remodel of the bathroom gives you opportunity to put some of these principles into practice.

For example, an RV tub may have a glass sliding door. It looks good, and you found a piece of 2×2 that keeps it from sliding while you’re traveling. If you replaced it during your RV model, however, you could lighten your load. Install a lightweight, accordion pleated door in its place. The lighter door will lock in place for travel.

Your RV remodel might be even more radical. You may decide that no one uses that tub. Showers are quicker. Replace the tub with a white corner shower, opening up storage space. A fiberglass shower is a piece of bathroom furniture that is practical, efficient, mildew-resistant, and easy to clean. One-piece, seamless construction installs easily with Super Grip Foam Tape. For less weight, use a shower curtain. Attach a small fastener to hold it in transit.

An RV remodel might also take bathroom furniture from the hall and put it in the bath. Example: Having replaced the tub with a corner shower, move the hallway sink to the space beside the shower. You have free hallway space for a stacking washer/dryer!

Other RV bathroom furniture you might want to change:

1. brighter lights above a dark mirror
2. soap/shampoo dispenser attached to shower wall
3. over-the-door towel holders
4. lightweight medicine cabinet above sink
5. taller, roomier wood vanity
6. additional, plastic shower curtain rod for towels

Helpful Tip

RV bathroom furniture can be found online at any RV parts center. Smaller accessories are usually found at camping supply stores.

The Evolution of Bathroom Furniture

by Bath Towel on November 26, 2009

Imagine this is your bathroom. The vast windowless room is a testament to modern design; stone, steel, ceramic and wood combine in exciting ways to stimulate the tactile senses. The rough stone tiles warm the feet thanks to invisible under-floor heating. The far wall hosts a dual sink set-up, mounted on a large, smooth wooden surface, below the waste and pipe tails are beautifully exposed in a polished chrome finish.

The wall-hung aspect leaves the floor below open, making the already large room feel gigantic. The striking wood used for the surface is then echoed across the wall and into the rest of the bathroom; numerous drawer units hang independently, housing fresh towels and luxurious bath oils and shower gels. Following the units the eye is taken on a journey around the room to the bath panel that is made of the same dense, heavy, smooth wooden material. The future of bathroom furniture is here, and it’s sleek, bold and cool!

Bathroom furniture is no longer about cramming as much storage in to your bathroom space as possible, as with all aspects of contemporary trends it is about choosing beautiful, practical key pieces and utilising them in a stunning and effective way. Being a little bit clever about what you actually need to store in the bathroom allows you to throw open your bathroom in ways you have never previously imagined. Available in fully coordinated ranges and a huge collection of sizes you can create your dream set up using free moving drawer units, under basin counters; both wall mounted and floor standing, tall wall hung cupboard units, slatted towel racks, concealed bath panel storage areas and stunning mirrored cabinets.

Leading the way in terms of design, bathroom manufacturers are constantly changing the rules. Taking the idea of bathroom storage and combining them with modern styles making it a true feat of design and engineering. Seeing the potential of design combining form and function are the works of world’s most famous designers Philippe Starck and Lord Norman Foster. Leading them to produce remarkable furniture and advance their philosophy of “living in bathrooms”.

Not to be outdone many manufacturers (following the lead of top designers) have launched their own range of modular and fitted furniture. Allowing you the freedom to pick and choose from every aspect of the furniture range. Both wood and colours can be used to stunning effect. All sizes, surfaces (stone effect as well as wood are available), styles and even the design and size of the door handles!

Sometimes the limiting spaces we have to deal with may restrict what we feel we can fit into our bathrooms, but the new wave of bathroom furniture is also about the creation of space. Restrictions like pipe work are no longer an issue as they can now be enhanced and leave the area below the surface completely open, creating a feeling of space in any size room. One or two cleverly chosen wall hung drawer units or cabinets will bring a fresh and open appearance to even the smallest room.

With all the possibilities and combinations to choose from your new bathroom can be fresh, bold and functional, just select your key pieces and enjoy the beauty of clutter free, effortlessly stylish and incredibly practical bathroom enjoyment.
